The timber stalactites of an undulating cave-like ceiling bear down around the bar of a coffee shop in Łódź, Poland.

The restaurant is located in the very centre of Łódź – on the most important street in the city – Piotrkowska. The street – once a symbol of wealth of the one of the richest cities in this region of Europe is now an axis of mostly poor and degenerated district with monumental architecture from before the II World War.

Here’s one for all the luddites who whine that “the iPad doesn’t have a proper keyboard.” Piano Apprentice is an external keyboard for your tablet, only instead of adding QWERTY, it brings do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do.
The keyboard comes with a free iPad companion app which plugs in via the 30-pin dock connector. With these two parts, you can learn how to play the piano by following the on-screen instructions and/or pressing the keys as their internal LEDs light up.
But that’s not all. The 25-note keyboard is also Core MIDI compliant. This means that you can use it as a controller for other MIDI-aware apps on the iPad — Garage Band, for example. The keys are even touch-sensitive, so you won’t lose Garage Band’s excellent velocity-sensing when you use it.
The Piano Apprentice will go on sale in September, ready for the cool days and early nights of Autumn, and will cost around $100. The companion app will be free.

Apple called the lab a “black” lab because it was a secret facility that even some employees were unaware of. The company made the lab’s existence public to show that Apple takes antenna design and wireless testing seriously.
Apple gave journalists a private tour of its radio-frequency test facility to provide a glimpse into the process of designing wireless products such as iPhones and iPads.
A peek at Apple’s custom-built wireless testing lab, which consists of several anechoic chambers to measure frequency of each device in various settings. Each test chamber is lined with blue pyramid-shaped styrofoam designed to absorb radio-frequency radiation.

Google has long been unhappy with the state of broadband in America, where speeds lag far behind those of other developed countries. It announced the plan for its high-speed network, which would be open to other companies wanting to offer Internet service, just as federal regulators were debating new rules for the Internet and preparing a national broadband plan commissioned by Congress that could call for higher-speed networks to be available nationwide.
Google is showing the government “that we can have super-fast open broadband networks that break the duopoly of cable and telephone companies that we have today,” said Ben Scott, policy director for Free Press, a public interest group that advocates for open Internet rules.

Information Architects have released iA Writer for Mac. The application accompanies iA Writer for iPad, which we featured here last September.
A Writer for Mac is a digital writing tool that makes sure that all your thoughts go into the text instead of the program. iA Writer has no preferences. It is how it is. It works like it works. Love it or hate it. It’s unique FocusMode allows me to think, spell and write at one sentence at a time. iA Writer is fast; it works without mouse. It automatically formats semantical entities such as headlines, lists, bold, strong, block quotes written in markdown.
I have enjoyed using the iPad app, and have been particularly excited about the prospect of the Mac OS X counterpart. So far it works exactly as advertised and as you’d expect coming from the terrific people at Information Architects.
To see how it works, have a go at watching this video.
